Abstract

Torsional buckling strength of axially loaded columns was studied with particular attention to effect of residual stress; numerical approach was used in evaluating buckling strength so that columns with various patterns of residual stress distribution could be analyzed; series of five welded columns of constructional alloy steel were tested and compared with theoretical results; width- thickness ratio of outstanding flange made of constructional steel should be limited to 7. 5 to avoid premature torsional failure.
