Abstract

Objective The research proposes the study of the role of Barcelona market halls as an agent of urban revitalization, identifying their spatial, functional and social synergies. Developing an analysis of its commercial attractiveness; as focal points of local commerce polarity, and of its social attractiveness; as meeting points and sociability in the neighborhoods. Methodology A qualitative and quantitative analysis was carried out that allowed a joint evaluation of Barcelona market halls, through the bibliographic review and the systematization of data through the use of georeferencing tools (GIS). In addition, semi-structured interviews were conducted to the actors to know their perspectives. Deriving finally in the case of study of the Market of L'Abacería Central - Vila de Gracia. Conclusions It is concluded that the revitalizing character that the market halls contribute to the urban and social fabric of the city is not an isolated quality, but is linked to the synergies that they develop with other elements of their environment, compromising their own potential and vitality. Originality Although previous studies have emphasized the revision of the historical evolution of the market halls. This thesis focuses on the formulation of indicators to measure the commercial and social attractiveness of these urban facilities in neighborhoods.
