Ocupación de torres de iluminación por la Cotorra ( Myiopsitta monachus) en la ciudad de La Plata, Argentina

Abstract

We surveyed the artificial structures used as nest platform of the Monk Parakeet (Myiopsitta monachus) in the city of La Plata, recording the number of chambers and estimating the construction rate. We found nests in four types of lighting towers. Eighteen nests were found in 13 lighting towers (1.4 nests per tower with nests), with 1–5 chambers (mean: 1.6 chambers per nest). All the nests were active. The construction rate was 12 nests per year. The percentage of occupied towers was 22% and our projection indicates that all the towers would be occupied with nests in 2018. We advise to make structural modifications to avoid the advance in the use of these towers.Se relevaron las estructuras artificiales utilizadas como plataforma para nidos de la Cotorra (Myiopsitta monachus) en la ciudad de La Plata, registrando el número de cámaras y estimando la tasa de construcción. Se encontraron nidos en cuatro tipos de torres de iluminación. Se encontraron 18 nidos en 13 torres de iluminación (1.4 nidos por torre con nido), con entre 1–5 cámaras (promedio: 1.6 cámaras por nido). Todos los nidos estaban activos. La tasa de construcción fue de 12 nidos por año. El porcentaje de torres ocupadas fue de 22% y la proyección indica que el total estaría ocupado con nidos en 2018. Se aconseja realizar modificaciones estructurales para evitar el avance en el uso de estas torres.
