In this chapter, we introduce Intel's research efforts and recent break-throughs in the field of silicon photonics. We present an industrial perspective on the benefits of silicon photonics, a plan for the development of integrated devices, and the challenges involved with manufacturing these devices in high volumes. We then present an overview of Intel's silicon modulator work, including design, characterization, and scaling of the modulator. Finally, we provide an overview on Intel's research on devices based on stimulated Raman scattering (SRS), including measurements of continuous-wave (CW) gain and CW lasing in silicon.
