TAFSIR AL-QUR’AN DAN CORE VALUES KEBANGSAAN DI INDONESIA MODERN: STUDI PEMIKIRAN HAMKA, QURAISH SHIHAB DAN “TAFSIR KEMENAG”

Abstract

This article aims to discuss the thoughts of Hamka, Quraish Shihab and the team of interpreters “tafsir Kemenag” in interpreting the verses of the Qur'an related to the core values of nationality; humanity and justice, unity and harmony. Using descriptive method and Gideens' agency theory, this study processes the collected data into units of analysis that are interconnected with each other, and form a coherent storyline about how the basic values are perceived by the interpreters and how the embedded values color their interpretations seen from the discussion of the above issues. This study found that in the three works of tafsir studied, the interpreters with their respective basic attitudes showed acceptance and even placement of the state organization of the Republic of Indonesia as an option that can protect the different backgrounds of its citizens. Hamka accepts it critically, measuring his acceptance with an Islamic perspective. Quraish Shihab, further accepted it through filling this independence constructively. First, through activism, becoming a civil servant, rector, Minister of Religious Affairs of the VII Development Cabinet (1998), and Ambassador of Egypt and Djibauti. Secondly, ideologically, through providing critical notes on the Ministry of Religious Affairs' Qur'an translation and interpretation project, writing his own tafsir and translation of the Qur'an. Meanwhile, the “tafsir of the Ministry of Religious Affairs,” is undoubtedly a representative of the state in conveying the message of the Qur'an. The study also found that the work of tafsir is a reflection of the interpreter's embedded values as a Muslim and a good citizen. Finally, this study finds that the interpreters' agencies exert their own efficacy and contribute in their own ways to the discourse on religion and state relations at large.
