Abstract

• Efficacy and safety studies of new therapies are critically dependent on predictive animal models. • Rodent models are widely used but have limitations for translational research. • Pigs can now be genetically engineered to reflect human disease mechanisms and pathology. • Tailored biomedical pig models have the potential to bridge the gap between basic research and clinical trials.
