This paper uses the 2015 PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment) data to test the hypotheses in the theoretical research framework of the influence of demographic and family characteristics on learning outcome of Vietnamese and Eastern Asian students. The research result demonstrates that among demographic characteristics not going to kindergarten, going to kindergarten less than one year or late entrance grade 1 of primary school can reduce the learning outcome of students. However, the study finds that the gender difference in learning outcome does not have statistical significance. Among family characteristics, socio – economic condition has positive influence on learning outcome. In the relationshiops with demographic characteristics, the other family characteristics tend to have various influences on learning outcome. The paper also indicates that Vietnamese students tend to achieve higher learning outcome than that of Eastern Asian students
