Leveraging Linguistic Sciences and Artificial Intelligence to Correct Qur’anic Recitation: The Al-Fatihah application for Indonesians as a model

Abstract

The world is witnessing rapid advancements in artificial intelligence technologies, while non-Arabic speakers continue to face substantial difficulties in pronouncing Arabic phonemes and reciting the Qur’an accurately. This paper explores a technological approach and a practical model that addresses these challenges by integrating linguistic sciences with artificial intelligence. The study examines an Al-Fātiḥah correction application developed specifically for Indonesian learners by the Saudi educational company Bajdah, which serves as the case study for this research. The paper aims to examine the integration of artificial intelligence and the operational mechanisms underlying this technology. The system functions by having the user record their voice, converting the audio input into digital data, and comparing it to an ideal model recitation. It subsequently provides feedback on pronunciation errors, enabling the learner to adjust and refine their recitation. The paper outlines the advantages of this learning approach, including its self-paced accessibility at any time and from any location, immediate evaluation that helps learners identify both strengths and weaknesses, the ability to re-record and undergo repeated assessment, and the issuance of a certificate of proficiency in Al-Fātiḥah. The study reveals that this application constitutes a pioneering initiative that brings together linguistic sciences and artificial intelligence tools to support Qur’anic instruction for non-Arabic speakers. It demonstrates that artificial intelligence is not merely a technological instrument but rather a comprehensive epistemic framework, one that enables the application to continuously learn and improve its performance through natural language processing and automatic speech recognition technologies.
