Background: Human APOBEC3H is a mutation-inducing restriction factor for HIV-1 that exists as multiple haplotypes. Results: Two APOBEC3H haplotypes were biochemically characterized. Conclusion: An amino acid polymorphism between APOBEC3H haplotypes II and V alters their processivity, but not mutagenic ability. Dimerization is required for efficient processivity. Significance: APOBEC3H has redundant processive mechanisms enabling haplotypes to efficiently restrict HIV-1 but by distinct mechanisms.
