Abstract

Participatory aquatic biomonitoring in Latin America and the Caribbean is still in the initial stage. This article reviews the experiences registered by researchers and those interested in the subject, who attended the survey disseminated by the Macrolatinos@ network, in addition to expanding the information through consultation with different sources. Most of the experiences have been developed since 2010, mainly in Mexico and Colombia. Mainly are investigations and consulting requirements. It is important to consolidate strategic alliances, which generate solidity and credibility for funding agencies. Once stability and recognition is achieved, and participation of academics, scientists, managers, and citizens must maintain the maximum technical-scientific rigor. Stakeholders should highlight the potential of freshwater aquatic ecosystems, as well as their ecological and social importance, to democratize science and reduce the gap with society.
