New endoscopic technique for examination and cinematography of the nasopharynx

Abstract

An endoscope mounted on a simply operated mechanical stage and used with topical anesthesia has been designed to facilitate examination and cinematography of the nasopharynx. A trial in the Mouth and Throat Out‐Patient Clinic of the Peter MacCallum Clinic, Melbourne, has shown that the endoscope provides a prolonged, magnified and well illuminated image which can be viewed by several clinicians and students in turn without distress to the patient and the actual lesion can be recorded easily on movie film. Furthermore the examiner's hands are free during the examination to perform biopsy under direct vision. The trial has shown that, in addition to its unique value in teaching, the endoscope has a real place in special centers in the routine care of patients with nasopharyngeal disease. In some cases the endoscope will reveal clearly suspected disease, not seen by routine methods of examination. Copyright © 1967 American Cancer Society
