Complexity theory is one of several theoretical orientations that have come out of the work of scientists and others since the late 20th century. Since that time, many supposedly fixed truths have been thrown into ques- tion not by those who simply questioned the truths, but by those who have gone beyond doubting the individual beliefs to doubting the very system of thought in which the beliefs were constructed.
