Abstract
Recognizing different iris patterns from one person to the next is one of the most reliable biometric identification methods. It requires a strong light source to achieve high‐contrast images of the iris. This is a major challenge on smartphones and tablets because of the limitations in terms of space, power consumption and cost. The Kaiser Friedrich Award has now been presented for the development of a highly efficient infrared LED specifically designed for iris scans in mobile devices.
