Abstract

O estudo é resultado de pesquisa bibliográfica, de pesquisa "in loco" com lactantes e de experiência profissional. A autora analisa aspectos antropológicos da amamentação e revela que grande número de nutrizes demonstra conhecimento empírico emergente de sua herança sócio-cultural, no período da lactação; proibições escrupulosas sem justificativas ou fundamentos deixam as nutrizes indecisas quanto ao que "tem que fazer" e o que "não pode fazer", as inúmeras superstições e crenças, que envolvem a amamentação, carecem ser conhecidas e aceitas pelos enfermeiros com risco de gerar choque cultural na sociedade e, conseqüentemente, desestímulo ao aleitamento materno.The study results of bibliographic research, local research with nursing, and professional experience. The author analyses breast feeding anthropological aspects and reveals that a great number of nursings demonstrate empirical knowledge emerging from their social-cultural heritage in the lactation period. She demonstrates that scrupulous prohibitions without positive fundaments orjustifications demanded too much their relatives and friends let them undecided to what they "have to do" and what they "should not do". The innumerable beliefs and superstitions that concerns the lactation need to be known and accepted by the nurses, otherwise they run a risk to provoke cultural impact on society and consequently disfavor breast feeding
