(2012) characterize a RecA-dependent and ClpXP-regulated pathway that controls the acquisition of several apoptotic markers upon bactericidal treatment of prokaryotes, placing the hypothetical origin of apoptosis further downstream in evolution. © 2012 Elsevier Inc.
