Abstract

This article is the result of a doctoral thesis that examines the curriculum and professional training of Graphic Design (GD) in Higher Education (HE). Historically, the teaching of GD has been linear and operational, lacking an interdisciplinary and complex approach. However, this methodology no longer meets the current demands of a globalized education or the problems faced by society, given the complexity of the international context. Therefore, it is necessary to carry out a curriculum transformation based on complex thinking, which allows for the training of competent and comprehensive graphic designers. This article aims to present the current state of GD and its relationship with professional training and the curriculum in the context of HE, in order to outline strategies that promote such education. For this purpose, a descriptive review was conducted to analyze the main studies related to GD training and the curriculum. This review was carried out through exploration in different internationally recognized databases. The results highlight the need to transform GD curricula towards interdisciplinary, complex, and flexible approaches that promote praxis.
