Although scientific publications on the subject of optimism have been numerous in the field of general psychology over the last fifteen years, there have been very few studies in the area of sport. In an effort to advance the body of knowledge related to optimism in sport, this article will present a review of the scientific literature stemming from research in North America on the subject of optimism. More specifically, the two theoretical approaches which have received the most attention of researchers in the field of optimism over the past thirty years will be presented. An overview of the limits of optimism studies is also discussed along with orientations for future research in the area of optimism and sport. © De Boeck Université.
