Abstract

Development of high specific power electrical machine is a key step in the journey toward more/all electric aircraft. Permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSMs) are good candidates to achieve higher specific power and high efficiency. Progress in the development of advanced materials play a key role in enabling the future electrified aircrafts. Therefore, a novel dual-phase magnetic material (previously presented in literature) employed to design an interior permanent magnet synchronous machine (IPMSM). This paper discusses the performance comparison between dual phase magnetic material and conventional magnetic materials used for rotor laminations. Furthermore, this paper presents the design procedure of a 250kW high specific power IPMSM design, and its electromagnetic and mechanical analysis. Simulation results are included to demonstrate the proposed design's performance and capabilities.
