Abstract

There is hardly a more important strategic question for Australia's defence policy than how close to position itself towards its American ally and how much support to expect from Washington, particularly during times of major changes in the geostrategic environment. As a result, the Australia–New Zealand–United States ({\{}ANZUS{\}}) alliance has been of singular importance to Paul Dibb's professional life. During the Cold War, he was directly involved in negotiating Australia's intelligence and defence arrangements with the {\{}US{\}} ally. For instance, as Deputy Secretary of Defence for Strategy and Intelligence, Dibb had a major role in running the policy
