Abstract

A recurrent fistula after operation for a thyreoglossal cyst is most times the result of an inadequate operation. Embryologically the thyreoglossal duct runs through the midportion of the hyoid bone which part should be removed during the operation. An ectopic thyroid forming a mass over the hyoid bone may be confused with a thyreoglossal duct. An I-131 study may be useful.
