Lithostratigraphy of the Tertiary Vaigat formation on Disko, central west Greenland.

Abstract

The formation is divided into six members formed by two major igneous events. The first event gave rise to the volcanic rocks from the Naujanguit member and two minor volcanic systems enclosed therein with the basalts of the Qordlortorssuaq member constituting the waning phase of the first igneous event. The second event gave rise to the volcanic rocks of the Ordlingassoq member within which are enclosed the alkaline basalts of the Manitdlat member. Rock types represented are: tholeiitic picrites, silicic basalts and magnesian andesites (many with native iron), olivine-poor tholeiitic basalts, alkaline picrites and alkaline basalts. -W.S.W.
