Abstract

Carlos Ibáñez del Campo's dictatorship and the imposition of a technocratic government determined to assume a key role in the organization of the public transit system, marked a breakdown in efforts made by authorities in previous years. The political decision in favor of motorization and the unprecedented resources invested in its adaptation to the city, allowed authorities to take on a leading role in controlling and organizing new cars, and favored social legitimization of new technologies as the predominant form of urban circulation. Towards the end of the 1920s, as in other cities of the world, the transformation of the urban landscape was evident. The new means of transport prevailed and the role of animals as a driving force behind urban movement was questioned.
