Giant resonant magneto-optic Kerr effect in nanostructured ferromagnetic metamaterials

Abstract

We show that the magneto-optic Kerr effect can be significantly enhanced in composite nanostructured metamaterials due to plasmon dipole resonance of individual particles making up the composite. We find that in contrast to continuous ferromagnetic medium nanostructured film possesses a nontrivial frequency-dependent optical response which can be potentially used for data recording and processing as well as for diagnostics of magnetization state of composite ferromagnetic films. © 2007 American Institute of Physics.
