Abstract

The type of lumbago under discussion corresponds to that occurrence which is most commonly met with in current practice, the acute lumbago of effort. The case is usually one of a man full of vigor, in good health, of 40 yr of age, who has leaned forwards to lift up a load; on straightening up again he experiences a violent lumbar pain, which rivets him to the spot. Sometimes the pain persists with full severity; the completely disabled patient is not able to return home by the usual means. Most often, at the end of several minutes, the pain eases; feeling tender, the subject recommences his work, achieves his journey, returns home and goes to bed. On waking, however, the same severe pain, as acute returns as the man tries to get up from bed.
