Documentary channels have long been seen as the workhorse of the pay-basic tier, a key draw for high-value subscribers. Factual programmers, more than most, have responded to the challenge of digital by spinning off new channels to occupy as much shelf-space on the EPG as they can. But with cash-strapped platforms resisting demands for higher carriage fees, the channels must seek new ways to develop their brands.
