Abstract

Addresses the nature and severity of sedimentation problems at hydroelectric power plants in the USA. The discussion is based on the findings of a joint study undertaken by the US Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) and the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) to obtain a quantitative assessment of the problem and identify and management measures being taken. The information, based on questionnaires and summarised here, is part of an ongoing effort to develop sediment management guidelines for the US hydroelectric industry. The results indicate that 25 per cent of hydroelectric reservoirs in the USA have some form of sedimentation problem. The frequency of problems is slightly higher for larger reservoirs. Some 15 per cent of respondents considered their sedimentation problem to be severe.
