Abstract

An outbreak of hand, foot, and mouth disease is described, involving 51 cases. In addition to the hand vesicles, foot vesicles, and mouth ulcers, chil- dren under the age of 3 had a characteristic rash on the buttocks. There was some evidence that Coxsackie A type 16 virus was the causal agent. A similar though clinically distinct disease is described, characterized by Koplik's type spots leading to mouth ulceration, petechiae on the soft palate, and general illness.
