The history of translation in Cameroon from 1840 to the present is outlined. The diversity of native languages in the country magnifies translation problems. Religious, literary, & technical perspectives are all necessary to an understanding of translation & its role in the precolonial & colonial periods in Cameroon. Religious missionaries played an important role in the early codification & translation of indigenous languages. The translation of administrative & socio-political texts plays a significant role in modern times. B. Annesser Murray
