Instead of simply presenting and discussing some new data obtained from current research, I intend to remember a period of exciting, materials-based solid-state physics that covers the period of my contacts with Alex Müller over many years and to reflect on the influence of his legendary discovery of superconductivity in cuprates on the course of solid-state physics in general and, in parts, on my own research since then. Considering the occasion this is done in a rather concise format and is not intended to be a serious review effort.
