Abstract

In this chapter of the book is a review of the main milestones and actors that marked the development of Industrial Engineering throughout history in the world, and particularly in Colombia. In the construction of this document, a non-experimental, transactional or transversal research design was established, with a descriptive scope, in which different types of research work were reviewed, which was taken as input to construct a timeline describing the evolution of this discipline. In the opening section of this chapter, the works of the actors who set the main trends in this discipline in the world are described chronologically. This review begins in the last decade of the 19th century, examining the work of Frederick Taylor and Henry Metcalfe, and goes on to analyse the influence that new trends such as e-Business, the Internet, Telecommunications, Broadcasting, among others, have on this discipline in the first decade of the 21st century. In the Colombian context, the different points of view on the origins of engineering in Colombia are reviewed. This part discusses the contribution made by indigenous communities, Europeans and communities of African descent. In addition, the work of people who promoted Industrial Engineering in the country as a profession is also recognized, as well as the origin of the teaching of this occupation in the country.
