Abstract
This study explored participants' views of an approach based on an appraisal model within formal trainer courses as a means of focusing trainers' continuing professional development (CPD) as educators. It used a qualitative method of retrospective semi-structured interviews. We have shown that this approach was successful, acceptable, and well received by the majority of trainers. It provided the means to formulate an achievable personal development plan (PDP) for the educational aspects of their role. Set in terms of a learning contract, this may also be used in the re-approval process. It also has the potential to help deaneries with educational planning. © 2008 Radcliffe Publishing Limited.
