Abstract

Deforestation is predicted to be the cause of orangutan to select specific habitat types to survive. The purpose of this research was to obtain information on habitat types selection by sumatran orangutan in Sipirok Nature Reserve, North Sumatra. Data collections were done by making a square sample plots of 100 m x 100 m in a systematic with a distance of 200 m in the line transect. The size of plot for measuring the biotic components is about 20 m x 20 m, for the unused plots in a systematic and search sampling for the used plot. Data were analyzed with Sorensen similarity indices, MANOVA, Neu selection indices and Chi-Square test. The nature reserve Sipirok area was orangutan habitat potential for use with proportions of each habitat type is a primary forest in the upper 900-1200 m above sea level (m asl) about 77.4%, primary forests 600-900 m asl (12.3%), secondary forest (6.1%) and agriculture dry land and shrubs (4.3%). There were differences in the characteristics of vegetation in each habitat type. Orangutan selected a specific habitat type with the highest selection indices (wi) and standard indices (Bi) in the primary forest of 600-900 m asl (wi = 2.210; Bi = 0.402) and secondary forest (wi = 2.052; Bi = 0.373). Orangutans in Sipirok Nature Reserve were adaptation with forest area around agriculture land.
