Introductory Note: The present investigation was carried out in 1959–1961 by J. Radwan Praglowski, assistant at the Palynological Laboratory of the Swedish Natural Science Research Council, in an endeavour to co-ordinate the purely basic research at the Palynological Laboratory with the applied palynology pursued by research workers at other institutions. It is also hoped that the illustrations may be of interest to students of forestry: the pollen grains can be referred to as the “alter ego” of trees and shrubs and they are often studied in the context of cytotaxonomy and forest history etc. I have to acknowledge my great indebtedness to the Royal Swedish Academy of Forests and Agriculture for two generous grants without which the present study could never have been made.
