Abstract

Basic research about cancer was initially focused on tumor cells, and carcinogenesis was then considered as the result of serial mutations (activation of oncogenes and loss of expression of tumor suppressor genes) modifying their phenotype (1). A good understanding of tumor progression led afterwards to a growing interest in stroma (2).
