Results about the relationship between the management of informal microenterprises and their possibilities of expansion are still limited. Based on data from the ENIGH and the estimation of logistic regressions, we explore the characteristics associated with the growth of these enterprises in Mexico. The results show that establishing the first location or evolving into a second one are structurally different problems, which are not always associated with the level of economic-financial indicators. Although vital to meet their objectives, profits do not seem to be the main determinant for growth in this sector. This could be capturing the fact that firms are not attempting to maximize intertemporal benefits and the restriction imposed by growth on the level of short-term profits. Thus, other characteristics associated with entrepreneurs and their projects must be considered to better understand their growth possibilities.
