Objective: To identify the factors that interfere in the communication during the shift and that have repercussions on the safety of the pediatric patient. Methods: Data collected in February and May 2012, through a semi-structured interview with 32 nursing professionals. Results: A category arose: "The factors that interfere in communication: transcending barriers to conduct the shift," demonstrating that effective communication at the shift requires the overcoming of physical and human barriers. Conclusion: Given the magnitude and complexity of pediatric patient safety, it is not enough that professionals are concerned with the use of technological resources and with the improvement of techniques; they should be aware of the skills and competencies to perform effective communication on shift duty.
