Abstract

The authors supply a modified reprint of an article that originally appeared in Diabetes Care (2004, Vol 27, page 2087-2088) in which they replied to the report from the Consensus Development Conference on Antipsychotic Drugs and Obesity. The current authors believe that the report overreaches available evidence when suggesting that clinicians consider prescribing one antipsychotic over another with the aim of avoiding diabetes. The current authors maintain that a switch from a beneficial antipsychotic regimen is usually the last resort after other management approaches have not been successful. Taken out of context, the Consensus Conference report might lead the inexperienced practitioner to switch medications prematurely and thus expose the patient to the risk of deterioration in his or her symptoms and, ultimately, relapse.
