Abstract

Upcycling is the process of converting discarded resources into new and higher-value products. Agri-food by-product generate substantial amounts of waste, and the development of upcycled products from them is crucial from both environmental and economic perspectives. This study aimed to verify awareness, purchase patterns, repurchase intentions, the need for a certification system and to recommend improvement related to upcycled products generated from agri-food by-product according to the interest in environmental issues. The nationwide study surveyed 1,000 adults aged 20∼69 years and found that people with a higher income, those who were more educated, and more interested in sustainable consumption, were more interested in environmental issues. Those aware of agri-food by-product upcycled products purchased upcycled plastic products and fashion items, primarily via online shopping. Respondents who were interested in environmental issues were more likely to consider environmental benefits when purchasing agri-food by-product upcycled products and were willing to pay higher prices for them. In addition, most respondents indicated the need for certification systems to address concerns about product awareness and quality and believed that such systems, managed by government-related agencies, would enhance consumer trust. Most respondents said that positive public perception is the key factor in promoting upcycled products from agri-food by-product. This study is significant because it provides an overall understanding of the production of agri-food by-product upcycled products and related policy development.
