Abstract

Hitherto it is questionable if all the mechanical inventions yet made have lightened the day's toil of any human being. They have enabled a greater population to live the same life of drudgery and imprisonment, and an increased number of manufacturers and others to make fortunes. John Steward Mill, 1848, pp. 756–757 Abstract What is energy? This chapter endeavors to answer the anterior question by providing definitions of energy from the viewpoint of physics, and discusses the various forms that energy takes so as to serve the human needs. The issue of energy aggregation is of paramount importance for comparing and evaluating different forms of energy. In this context, the present chapter describes and classifies the most widely utilized methodologies in energy measurement.
