Abstract
Considerations related to the improvement of paper properties by coating it with suitable materials. The original coated papers were surfaced with clay, and this mineral is still the basic pigment for printing papers. Calcium carbonate and titanium dioxide are used in various proportions to modify the characteristics of the coating. Now many plastics are used for surfacing paper products. Description of techniques and equipment used in the industry with particular attention paid to automation of production. Gummed papers, waxed papers, and polyethylene coting of paper and paper board are also briefly discussed.
