The objective of this paper is to study the coverage of four Brazilian weekly news magazines during the landslides in the mountainous region in the municipalities of Rio de Janeiro in 2011 that killed 860 people. This study examines testimonies discourses specificities from a comparison with expert sources. Both testimonial and expert speech are part of discourses about the catastrophe that sound naturalized but are art of certain Discursive Formations and anchored by certain Ideological Formations. We show how experience, apparently a source of meaning, sets up a discoursive network with the role of highlighting singularities. It is concluded that the experience of testimonial sources is discursively confined to specific roles and is reported far from power and knowledge. (English) [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
