Exaptation: structural approach, recent examples and implications

Abstract

We reconstruct the terminology proposed by Gould & Vrba (1982), and the related structural approach to evolution. We present two recent exemplar studies in human evolution which evaluate an exaptation hypothesis. We then point out some operational implications for evolutionary research.
