Abstract
Twenty-three ostracode species, identified from 652specimens, were found in 61 samples from seven of theeight sites of Leg 42A. Most of the samples were corefractions 5 cm long (50 cc). Eleven additional samplescontained no ostracodes; these samples were generallyconcentrated in suspected azoic horizons. The highestrate of specimen recovery was in the Cyprideis Zone(Pannonian-Messinian), especially in the eastern Medi-terranean (Site 376), where restricted marine condi-tions also produced the fewest ostracodes both beforeand after the late Miocene "salinity crisis."
