Abstract
In the present study, 100 groundwater samples were collected during pre-monsoon and post-monsoon seasons (50 samples per season) from the Myorpur block of Uttar Pradesh state in India and analysed for TDS, pH, EC, Ca2+, Mg2+, Na2+, K+, Cl-, SO42-, HCO3, NO3-, As, Cd, F, Pb, Ni, and Hg. Based on the results, the water quality index (WQI) and heavy metal pollution index (HPI) values were calculated to evaluate the suitability of groundwater for drinking purposes. For the quality assessment, values of analysed parameters were compared with the WHO (2011) and BIS (2012) drinking water standards. Data plotted on the Piper diagram indicates the dominance of bicarbonates and chlorides in groundwater. The analytical results indicated that the water quality of the area is fit for consumption only with proper filtration measures. Spatial analysis using ArcGIS software finds that the regions close to the industrial units have poor-quality drinking water.
