Abstract
The measurement of net G-I absorption of alkali by analysis of diet and stool is complicated by several problems, including inconvenience and imprecise timing of prolonged stool collection and inhomogeneity of stool samples. The purposes of this study are to describe a new method for measurement of net alkali absorption from the G-I tract, to present empirical evidence supporting the validity of this method, and to provide theoretical evidence for the superiority of urinary measurements over measurements in food and feces.
