This study aims to determine (1) the type of error and (2) the factors causing the error. This research was conducted at SMP Negeri 2 Tarub in the 2020/2021 Academic Year. With qualitative descriptive research methods. Data were collected using tests and interviews. The resource persons for this research were class VIIA students, totaling 32 students. Interviews were taken using a purposive sample of 6 of 32 students in class VIIA. The data analysis used includes data reduction, data presentation, and verification. The data and information in this study are presented in the form of text that is presented descriptively. The results of the research as a whole, the percentage of errors experienced by students is a reading error of 16.66% error, 40% error in understanding the problem, 40% error in transformation error, 73.33% error in process skills, 80% error in writing the final answer. From the analysis of student errors, the causes of students' errors in solving story problems were obtained, because they did not master the material and were less thorough in working on the questions.
