Abstract
Division of vegetative cells in the morphologically complex palmelloid marine green alga Palmoclathrus stipitatus Womersley, as observed at the light microscope level, involves the division of a uninucleate parent cell into two progeny cells that are initially asymmetrical. This "asymmetric binary eleutheroschisis" occurs primarily in the superficial layer of thalli partially regenerated from cultured stipe segments. The asymmetry is associated with the segregation of a prominent membrane-bound body into only one of the two progeny. The parental cell wall is discarded and, apparently, eventually incorporated into the colonial matrix
