Practical use cases of generative AI in teaching and academic professional work: an exploratory study

Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has great potential to enhance productivity, boost innovation, and transform the economy. In this study, we report the lessons learned while exploring generative AI for teaching and academic professional work. We highlight the strengths and limitations of four famous free AI chatbots. We suggest a strategy to utilize multiple chatbots for a task and how to mitigate privacy concerns when using online chatbots. We present five practical use cases of AI with the codes and prompts. This paper contributes to the Information Systems (IS) education field in three areas. First, it is an excellent introduction to AI for IS faculty and students new to the topic. Second, the five cases inspire IS faculty and students to embark on the journey of using AI. Third, we showcase the utility of Google Colab as a platform for developing and deploying AI applications.
