Abstract

The rhythmic migration pattern of the dinoflagellate Ceratium furca is a result of ecological adaptation to avoid high irradiance. The high proportions of dividing cells at deeper depths are likely to be an ecological response to maintain their population away from the turbulence in the near-surface layer. © The Author 2011.
