Abstract

This paper describes 12 years of experience in developing simulation software for automotive companies. By building software from scratch, using boundary integral methods and other techniques, it has been possible to tailor the software to address specific issues that arise in painting processes applied to vehicles and to provide engineers with results for real-time optimization and manufacturing analysis. The title provides the focus and the paper describes how living under the shadow of uncertainty has made us more innovative and more resourceful in solving problems that we never really expected to encounter when we started on this journey in 1999. © 2012 IFIP International Federation for Information Processing.
